Interior design,in many ways,is a precursor to trends in architectural andlandscape design.It is a rich field allowing one to study the latent possibilities ofthe other spatial design fields.In interior design,we find innovation and materialexperimentation unhindered by certain constraints of durability and economy.Asa result,since Modernism,interior design has shown a steady and healthy rate ofinnovation.In fact much of history’S most advanced architecture and landscapearchitecture is footnoted with previously realized interiors.As we look towards the future of interior design,China emerges as a fertileterritory for innovation and accomplishment.China may likely chart the globalcourse for innovation within the field,both technologically and stylistically.Thiscan be attributed to several design factors including a strong historical tradition,the reaction to homogenizing urban conditions,and the lack of emotionalbaggage concerning style.China has an extremely developed historical tradition of the concept of interiorwhich resonates through a multitude of scales.From that of the entire country(the Great Wall),to the omnipotent and ubiquitous city walls,to the smallestcourtyards and private gardens,China’S history demarcates a strong divisionof interior and exterior.The idea of the interior iS expressed in every aspectof social organization,and thus architectural typology.Spatially,at the scaleof contemporary interior design,these manifestations of interior space appearas oases within the city fabric.Courtyards and walled garden compounds,surrounded by the city lire,exist as sumptuous worlds hidden behind brickand earthen walls.The jnteriors become not only a retreat from city Iire,butan expression of the universe.The interior design in this case articulates apersonaI modeI or vision for the entire world Regardless of the attractivenessof the exterior or(more often)lack thereof,the jnterior spaces flourish as theappropriate places to reflect wealth,luxury,and status.2100433B
